Training: What does it Mean to You?

A Broader ViewEvery so often its time to renew ones commitment to whatever level of goals one may have within self defense training.

The question becomes: What does it mean to you?

It’s a personal question and, at its best, training should be a personal journey.

This is what it means to me…

In my mind, my training is not so much about fighting as it is about choices and, ultimately about freedom.

Freedom gained by the recognition that in many ‘worst case scenarios’ you will not have to fight.

Training not to fight, by simply learning to recognize the moments and ‘intersections’ in time where you can choose ‘not to fight’.

Freedom to feel good about allowing that humanity to take precedence over misplaced ego, pride, anger or frustration.

Freedom to walk or run away from any threat and be at peace with that.

Freedom of expression, if all else fails, where your choices are so limited, and a physical reaction is necessary that you can move effectively to increase your chances of getting home safe and sound. Where you can explode with commitment to gaining the upper hand and thus allow your humanity to dictate the terms of mercy.

Renewing that frame of mind, in thread of training is not always easy. Getting caught up in winning and losing, in beating and the bloodlust can be intoxicating and perhaps even necessary on some level.

However, in the quieter times, its important to remind myself that on a higher level, my training serves to allow me the freedom to functionally survive rare moments in order to live a fuller life.

Peace& See Ya in Class

New Location and New ‘Beginnings for Beginners’

4 JKD Photo Reserve 535

Its been a while and lots has gone on…

Our group has moved its ‘beginner classes’ to a new location and we feel there is a real fit there.

TBD

This falls in line with our philosophy. We take a functional approach to self defence. No gimmicks, no belt system and although it is still threaded together as an art form, it should be applicable to everyday life and functional…Day One.

So there is a nice fit and its a great space. Join us.

PS: A word on ‘beginners classes’ :

We are all beginners and beginners for our whole experience here in one fashion or another…

The fundamentals reinforced in these classes need to be reviewed and sharpened. More experienced students and newer ones alike train

together, learn together and discover together that there is always something new to learn about the basics.

With that in mind,

I felt it might be appropriate to re-post this earlier posting…..answering the question: How long will it take?

All great things take time…Who are we kidding?

Great things will take just a bit more time.

That is a fact and that is the art.

But

Some pretty good things can happen pretty fast.

Simply defending yourself does not have to take years. It starts day one.

It is functional day one, and you can take just a few months to defend yourself OR take years to learn the ‘art’…

Your goal is a personal decision.

Just for pleasure or looking to be an artist?

Both are fine and both can offer great things.

Take as much time as you need.

Either way -you have to get started.

So ask yourself-

Do you want to get healthy & learn to defend yourself in the real world?

Do you want to really be able to move gracefully and powerfully?

Does your gym membership make that promise?

Great things take time and- we all deserve it.

Take the “rocking chair” test. Picture this.

Rocking in your chair, years from now—older, wiser and now looking back on your life.

Among the many things you would have done differently—

Would you have invested in a new kind of confidence?

Not allowing worry to get in the way of getting fear out of your everyday life?

Would you have traded all the fads, gimmicks, and “fitness” classes for a real life-long asset?

Imagine how that would feel.

All you need is to make the decision to trade in some wasted time- to make time for this.

Our system works…for anyone-fast & simple.

The instruction is supportive and world class.

The people in class—just like you.

Makoto and Paul on Toronto Jay Show!

Makoto and Paul Irish had the opportunity to appear on the Toronto Jay show this past Friday.

They spoke of their initial beginnings and what it meant to be a martial artist—and as a JKD practioner how it ultimately has led them both to a free form of self expression. As Paul stated, its a way of life.

Most people would not equate ‘self expression’  with something such as martial arts but this is the beauty of JKD. It allows one to pull and adapt aspects of so many arts and seamlessly weave it into something of function within their ‘own JKD’. The key element being that JKD has created a framework with concepts and attribute training that allows one to incorporate new elements and still maintain an ‘integrated’ system.

It is no wonder that JKD has and always will be considered the ‘original MMA’.

Peace.

Makoto Kabayama-Paul Irish Seminar “Lets Get It On!!” this Nov 27th /28th…….Don’t miss it!!

What Can Be Learned from Martial Arts?

What can be learned from martial arts? Seems like an obvious question.

For the record, its not just about learning to “fight”

There are many valuable life-skills to be learned in the martial arts.

Among these are: learning to control aggression, the development of self-respect and self-control, a focus on fitness for life, as well as learning effective self-defense skills.

Students are taught to avoid confrontation and violence if at all possible.

Proper martial arts instruction should always focus on teaching the individual control – control of self and, if necessary, control of a harmful threat.

Anger, cruelty and revenge have absolutely no place in the martial arts.

Like many things, the lessons you take away with you are often not the most pbvious at first glance.

Most Frequently Asked Question…..How long will it take?

Bullied Girl Posts Video—Gets Help from Police.

According to CNN, a 15-year-old voiced her dislike for a hip-hop music group and got punched in the face by a classmate.

A crowd of six to 10 classmates were following the girl and her boyfriend home from school in Newark, Ohio, on an autumn day in September. Some kids were taping it and others were egging on the assailant, who was on the school wrestling team.

The incident was caught on tape and police investigated.

The assailant-a 15 year old was arrested with more charges pending for those inciting the incident.

Happy ending?…Maybe. Maybe not.

The reality is that this type of incident is happening all over the country—every single day.

In this case, a video tape led to media attention and a call to action, but for the many others it is a day-to-day battle.

The young victim was quoted as saying that ” you can use your words and not your hands” to get the help you need and that you should not ‘ just sit there and take it’.

Wise words from a young girl, and creating awareness and using your voice to bring attention to such behaviour is a viable part of the overall solution.

However, in my opinion, I think basic training that prevents a child [or adult] , of any size or gender , from being punched in the face is an option that should be given consideration.

Violence may not alway be avoidable, and in this case it was relegated to a single punch to the face. If it had been a beating–would that be reason enough to justify training that would have allowed the girl to be aware of the immenient danger—allowed for avoidance of it and ultimately–the ability to maintain her safety?

Maybe it would have made for less ‘entertaining’ video and we would not have been reading about it.

And then again…..she is someones baby girl.

For my part, I would want my son or daughter to be aware and avoid violence BUT come home ‘safe and sound’-period.

The 3rd Degree offers programs that address bullying in any form and for any age….give us a call and find out how a few short hours of training can empower you and the ones you care about.
